Our Strategic Plan
The Kalamazoo Community Foundation believes that in order for us to achieve our mission and vision, we must have clearly defined goals and strategies.
Each year our board and staff engage in an intensive strategic planning process to develop goals and strategies that drive our work for the year ahead. We are intentional about the actions we take, with plans that are specific, measurable and informed by data and results from prior efforts. This is a summary of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation's strategic plan for 2012 to 2014.
Guiding Principles and Critical Success Factors
Our Guiding Principles and Critical Success Factors are identified by the board of trustees and reassessed annually.

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation enhances the quality of life for all in the greater Kalamazoo area through community leadership and the stewardship of permanently endowed funds.

Core Competencies
Core Competencies are competencies we, as an organization, have or are developing. These are identified by our staff and reassessed annually.
Customer Engagement
Our ability to fully engage a diverse customer base. This includes our ability to identify customers, expand our customer base as needed, assess our customers' needs and provide service that delights them.
Workforce Engagement
Our ability to fully engage the Community Foundation's workforce (staff and volunteers) to produce a high level of performance, retention and satisfaction.

Our ability to take risks, and lead and guide others.

Strategic Objectives
The Kalamazoo Community Foundation's strategic objectives are broad statements about goals we are trying to achieve. Achieving these goals directly impacts our ability to realize our mission and vision, and how effective we are in terms of our Critical Success Factors. These statements are developed by our staff and drive the action plans for the Community Foundation as a whole and for specific functional areas. They are reassessed annually.
Community Leadership and Impact
- Produce greater community engagement and capacity to improve retetion, achievement and graduation results for the most vulnerable students throughout Kalamazoo County.
- Increase 10-year average lifetime giving to the Community Foundation by five percent per year and maximize alignment with established priority areas.
- Increase the percentage of grantees that meet or exceed at least one-half of posted benchmarks to 90 percent within three years.
Service Excellence
- Convert to a fully integrated database management system to enhance overall operational capability by 2013.
- Achieve 90 percent customer satisfaction across the Community Foundation.
- Achieve the standards of excellence as required by the Michigan Quality Leadership Award (application within three years) and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (application within five years).
- Develop and implement an innovative marketing communications strategy that strengthens understanding of the Community Foundation's work and promotes community philanthropy.
Workforce Excellence
- Maintain the current level of staff performance with 90 percent of staff rated at the "Frequently Exceeds Job Requirements" level or above.
- Achieve and sustain overall staff satisfaction at a rating of 4.25.
- Implement a comprehensive succession planning and organizational learning approach to ensure efficient and effective replacement of the workforce, greater diversity of the workforce, and development of talent to meet future needs.
- Address diversity and inclusiveness and ant-racism issues to improve the overall Intercultural Development score by 10 points and advance our position on the ERAC/CE continuum by one level.
Financial Integrity
- Administer resources to maximize financial performance and grow assets over the long term.
