Education Reconnection
In 2007, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, on behalf of the Kalamazoo County Multi-Purpose Collaborative Body, applied for and received funding from the Charles S. Mott Foundation to undertake Education Reconnection, an initiative designed to positively impact the high school graduation rate of Kalamazoo area youths and expose them to education opportunities beyond high school, so that all of Kalamazoo's youths will have the skills and education needed to lead successful lives.
Through Education Reconnection, the Community Foundation and its partner organizations will:
• Assist area agencies and organizations in identifying relevant data and using factual information about youth achievement and programs to develop effective interventions.
• Identify and/or establish school- and community-based programs that help out-of-school youths successfully reconnect to educational opportunities that enable them to finish high school.
• Identify institutional and organizational policies and practices that impede or improve educational outcomes, and develop appropriate recommendations.
• Mobilize community support for policies, practices and programs that improve educational outcomes for Kalamazoo County youths.
Education Reconnection is a joint effort of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, Greater Kalamazoo United Way and the Kalamazoo County Multipurpose Collaborative Body, with two Multipurpose Collaborative partners—Kalamazoo Regional Educational Services Agency and The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research—serving as the lead agencies.
