Remembering Art Hoekstra

Perhaps the best word to describe Art Hoekstra, who died on November 1, is passionate. He was passionate about the things he believed in; passionate about making a difference in the lives of others; and passionate about loving family, friends and strangers alike without condition or bias. Beginning in the early 1980s, Art served as Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Deacon's Conference for 20 years. During this time, dismantling institutional racism became both his passion and his mission, which led him to serve as an antiracism organizer and trainer with Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training for the last 15 years. Art was a catalyzing force to the Community Foundation on its journey toward eliminating structural racism and racial inequality within our organization as well as the broader community, and for that we will be forever grateful. We are both proud and humbled to have considered Art a trusted mentor and friend.
