Scholarship Information

Duane Young, a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and Michigan State University as well as a professional football player, established this fund in 1994 to provide scholarship assistance to student athletes who have the desire and the skills necessary to participate in athletics while attending a college/university in pursuit of a post-secondary degree.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be a graduating high school senior residing in Kalamazoo County or attending a high school within Kalamazoo County. Must have participated in sports at the varsity level in high school and desire to participate in athletics at a two- or four-year college/university (students who have accepted a full athletic scholarship from a college or university are not eligible); attend part-time or full-time; preference will be given to African American applicants and/or applicants pursuing a degree in education.

Application Requirements

  1. eGRANT scholarship application: Complete and submit one eGRANT scholarship application. We will match you to the Kalamazoo Community Foundation scholarship(s) that you are eligible for.
  2. If you are matched to this scholarship we will notify you, via email, that one Letter of Recommendation and one recommendation form is required. It must be completed by an adult who is not a family member, but knows the applicant well, such as a teacher, minister, employer, etc.
  3. Official cumulative high school transcript through the first semester or trimester of the senior year including SAT/ACT score(s).

  4. Financial need may be a consideration for this scholarship. If you have applied for financial aid by filling the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are applying for a need-based scholarship, please complete the student section of the Financial Information Summary form and then forward the form to the college financial aid office where you have been accepted. They will complete the form and return it to our office.
